Philodendron hastatum 'Silver Sword' is a cultivated form grown for its consistent silvery-blue foliage. The species Philodendron hastatum is native to the Atlantic Forest region of Brazil, where it grows in warm, humid forests supported by aerial roots that attach to tree trunks.
Leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, with a metallic sheen that is most intense in bright, indirect light. Juvenile leaves are smaller and more ovate, becoming longer and more pointed as the plant matures. Given a vertical support to climb, the foliage can increase significantly in size.
In the wild, the species produces a spadix and spathe typical of aroids, though flowering is uncommon in cultivated plants grown indoors. 'Silver Sword' is valued for its stable colouration and upright climbing growth, making it a popular choice for indoor collections.
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid prolonged direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers humidity above 60% for optimal growth.
- Media: Use a free-draining aroid mix with bark, perlite, and organic matter.
- Fertiliser: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18-27 °C; avoid prolonged exposure below 15 °C.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when roots fill the container; provide a moss pole or trellis for climbing.
